The Bavarian capital Munich is the third largest city in Germany, the fourth largest in the German-speaking world and the twelfth largest in the EU. Munich is considered to be the most livable city in Germany. It is also one of the fastest growing and economically most successful metropolises in Europe. With Allianz, BMW, Linde, Munich Re and Siemens, five DAX-listed companies are based in Munich alone. Numerous modern and historical buildings worth seeing, a wide range of cultural and shopping opportunities, international trade fairs, congresses and sporting events as well as the world-famous Oktoberfest make the cosmopolitan city, first mentioned in a document in 1158, a popular destination for tourists from Germany and abroad and an ideal location for your next team event in Munich.
Our Urban Challenge will of course take you to Marienplatz with the Mariensäule, which is the center of the former imperial residence city. Here you can watch a carillon at the New Town Hall every day at 11 am, 12 pm and 9 pm, and additionally at 5 pm between March and October, which shows two events from Munich’s city history. Or, a short distance away, you can climb the 306 steps up to the 56-meter-high viewing platform of “Alter Peter,” from which you have a wonderful view of Marienplatz and Munich’s Old Town, and in fine weather even as far as the Alps. You can find more information about climbing the tower at: erzbistum-muenchen.de.
Perhaps before or after Escape the City or the Urban Challenge there will be an opportunity for a detour to the Viktualienmarket, which is considered the culinary center of Munich. The term “Viktualien” comes from the Latin word victus, meaning “supplies” or “food.” Here, bakers, butchers, fishmongers, delicatessens and flower stalls have been offering their wares for more than 200 years. In addition, the “Dance of the Market Women” traditionally takes place on Shrove Tuesday. And in the beer garden at the Viktualienmarkt you can enjoy the Bavarian coziness in the midst of the hustle and bustle with the just bought snack and a freshly tapped wheat beer. An absolute must for your team event or company outing to Munich.
For beer drinkers, we also recommend a visit to the world-famous Hofbräuhaus, located just 400 meters from Marienplatz. In the house and beer garden, waiters and waitresses in traditional costumes serve typical Bavarian delicacies such as roast pork or knuckle of pork and, of course, the golden barley juice to up to 30,000 visitors from Munich and all over the world every day.
Also worth seeing is the Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady), which is also located just 300 meters from Marienplatz. It is actually called “Dom zu Unserer Lieben Frau” (Cathedral of Our Lady) and has been the cathedral church of the Archbishop of Munich and Freising since 1821. Information on opening hours and guided tours can be found at muenchner-dom.de.
Always worth a visit is the German Museum, built on an island in the middle of the beautiful Isar River. Founded in 1903, the building is one of the world’s most important technology and science museums. Every year, around 1.5 million visitors marvel at fascinating objects from the fields of science and technology, such as a reconstructed mining gallery, artificial lightning or a star show in the planetarium.
If you have a little more time, it is also worth taking a detour to the English Garden, one of the largest parks in the world, which was created in 1789 and whose tourist center is the Chinese Tower with a large beer garden. Or to the Nymphenburg Palace Park, dating back to the 18th century, with the palace of the same name, which is considered one of the largest and most important works of garden art in Germany. The Olympic Park, venue of the 1972 Summer Olympics, is also well worth a visit. Here, from the Olympic Hill or even from the Olympic Tower, you can enjoy a fantastic view over the park landscape designed with extensive water areas and the Munich city area.
