The Port of Hamburg is considered the third largest port in Europe. With Beiersdorf, Aurubis, Deutsche EuroShop, Fielmann, Jungheinrich and TAG Immobilien, six companies listed in the DAX or MDAX are based in Hamburg. In addition to its importance as an industrial and commercial metropolis, international city tourism also plays an important role for the city on the Elbe: Hamburg is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Germany and one of the fastest growing in Europe. The city is the world’s third-largest location for musicals after New York and London. In addition, the port city, which was first mentioned in a document in the 7th century and is one of the founding places of the Hanseatic League, scores with a wide range of other cultural offerings, numerous modern and historic buildings, internationally known trade fairs and major events, as well as diverse shopping opportunities.
The Elbpromenade at the “St.-Pauli-Landungsbrücken” is an ideal starting or finishing point for our iPad city rally, the Urban Challenge or our Escape the City game. From here you can enjoy a good view of the Hamburg harbor and the Elbphilharmonie, built near the mouth of the Alster into the Norderelbe. Time permitting, you can also book a guided tour of the world-famous “Elphi”, which was only completed at the end of 2016, under here before or after your company event.
A short distance into the city, the main church of St. Michaelis, affectionately known as “Michel” by the people of Hamburg, towers a proud 132 meters into the sky. On weekdays at 10 a.m. and 9 p.m., and on Sundays and public holidays at 12 p.m., the tower keeper blows his trumpet from four small windows in all directions. This centuries-old custom used to be the signal for opening and closing the city gates. And those who climb the 450 steps of the twelfth-highest church in the world are rewarded with a fantastic panoramic view of the port metropolis. Information on opening hours can be found here.
Another sight marks in the attractive Hamburg city center near the Binnenalster and the shopping mile “Jungfernstieg” the City Hall, built towards the end of the 19th century. In the impressive building with its 112 meter high tower, the marble figures “Mercy” and “Justice” in front of the entrance to the Senate enclosure embody the virtues on which the Hamburg Senate is supposed to orient itself.
North of the modern architecture of HafenCity stretches the Speicherstadt, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015. Within this warehouse district, in addition to the Customs Museum, the Spice Museum and the Miniatur Wunderland, there is also the Speicherstadt Museum. Here, in the authentic setting of a warehouse from 1888, the former hustle and bustle of the Speicherstadt is vividly depicted. In addition, a tour of the Speicherstadt with the Coffee Exchange, the Boiler House and the Sandtorquaihof, including a guided tour of the museum, is also offered.
After the successful completion of our Urban Challenge or our Escape the City Escape Game, we of course recommend a harbor tour. We hate to admit it, but the area of the port of Hamburg is actually as big as the whole of Cologne! With a delicious fish roll as refreshment, you can start from the Landungsbrücken to a highly interesting tour through the container port, the HafenCity and – depending on the water level – also the “Speicherstadt”.
