The first documented mention of Dresden dates back to 1206, but the city was probably founded as early as 1173, with the name going back to the Slavic settlement drežďany, meaning marsh or floodplain forest dwellers. From the end of the 15th century, Dresden developed first into an electoral and later into a royal residential city with the Altmarkt as its center. After these glorious times, Dresden’s city center was almost completely destroyed by heavy air raids during World War II. Since then, the historic old town has been reconstructed in large parts, although the reconstruction process took a long time. Thus, the Semper Opera House could not be reopened until 1985 and the newly built Frauenkirche was not even consecrated until 2005. The Residence Palace was also not rebuilt until 1985. Today it houses a museum complex that includes the Green Vault, the Museum of Prints and Drawings, the Numismatic Collection and the Armory.
